History: Uptown is home to the Aragon Ballroom, "America's Most Famous Ballroom," the Riviera Theatre, a popular Chicago live music venue, and many nightclubs
which feature live music, theatre, karioke and other entertainment. Also in Uptown is the Uptown Theatre, a mammoth ornate Jazz Age movie palace which has almost
4,500 seates! It is the largest free-standing theater in the United States, even larger in volume that Radio City Music Hall.
Uptown was significant in the birth of the Gilded Age, the Lyceum, the Movie Industry, the Jazz Age, the Big Band Era, the Rock Era, as well as many ties with
notorious 1920's Chicago gangsters. Gangsters like Al Capone, John Dillinger, "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn and others.
Over 140 movies have been filmed on Uptown's streets, including "His New Job," which was Charlie Chaplin's first movie with Essany Studios. Essanay's studio buildings,
which can still be found at 1333 Argyle Street, helped Silent Movie Star Gloria Swanson (star of "Sunset Boulevard"), Tom Mix, Rod LaRoque and many others get their
start in showbusiness. The owners of Essanay, Gilbert M. "Broncho Billy" Anderson and George K. Spoor (who used the first commercially-viable projector, the "Magnascope,"
to promote Essanay's earliest silent films) helped to make Chicago, for a short time in history, the "Movie Capital of the World," where four out of ever five movies
was produced - most of which were from Essanay Studios on Argyle Street.
